Red squirrels, once found across the UK, are now mainly limited to Scotland. Grey squirrels introduce from America in 1870 brought with them a virus which grey squirrels are immune to but can be passed to red squirrels. Red squirrel numbers across the UK are now approximately 287,000 compared to 2.7 million grey squirrels. Their ears can be tufted through the year before moulting in the Summer. Red squirrels are fully protected and are now considered endangered.
